Just as Doppler radar scans the skies for indicators of bad weather, Sickweather scans social networks for indicators of illness, allowing you to check for the chance of sickness as easily as you can check for the chance of rain.

Hello beta testers! Welcome to our latest beta release, SW-0.9.2 aka "Ash". Most of the updates that we made won't be obvious since this version was more about fighting off bugs in our code and stabilizing our platform, but there are a couple of exciting interface changes that you'll notice:

  • Full text input for reporting symptoms and illnesses
  • Option to post your status to Facebook and Twitter

The full text input is a sign of things to come (eg, full text searching on the map). For now, you can share any and all symptoms with us, but you'll still only be able to view the map and forecasts of the symptoms and illnesses that we're tracking, which will continue to grow. If you report symptoms and illnesses that we aren't tracking, it will not fall on deaf ears... that information will be processed by our algorithm to automatically make suggestions for expanding our tracking capabilities. In other words, the more input we get from you, the faster we'll evolve to track what matters most to you (another sign of things to come!).

Can crowdsourcing beat the flu?

From BBC News

Millions of people around the world are bracing themselves for their annual battle with flu. Could new crowdsourcing software be the answer to their prayers?

There doesn't seem to be any way out of it.

As the person next to you on the bus sneezes and you visualise tiny droplets of the virus spiralling towards you, you just know that, sooner or later, it will get you.

It seems unlikely that a smartphone application, as opposed to more tried-and-tested methods like vaccination or a face mask, could help you avoid going down with a dose of the flu this winter.

But that is what the creators of the website Sickweather, which launched this week in the US, claim.
